The Cartwright - Rodgers House

The Cartwright Mansion has stood as one of Terrell's architectural landmarks since 1883. Built for rancher and banker Matthew Cartwright, the Victorian residence is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and remains an extraordinary example of nineteenth-century craftsmanship. Original millwork, soaring ceilings, grand staircases, and nine fireplaces speak to the scale and artistry of the era, while every room reflects more than 140 years of history.

For the home's current owner, however, the mansion represented something much more personal. Having always dreamed of owning and restoring a historic home, that dream became reality when her husband surprised her by purchasing the Cartwright Mansion. She embraced the responsibility of restoring it with remarkable care, preserving its architectural character while layering in an eclectic collection of antiques, artwork, textiles, and meaningful objects gathered over time. The result is a home that feels deeply personal—one that celebrates history without feeling frozen in it.

Photographing the Cartwright Rodgers Mansion was an opportunity to document both the architecture and the passion behind its restoration. Every space reflects a thoughtful balance between preservation and personality, telling the story of a homeowner who saw not just what the house had been, but what it could become. It's a reminder that the most memorable homes aren't simply restored—they're thoughtfully brought back to life.
