The Power of Styling in Interior Photography
When it comes to interior photography, interior styling tips can make all the difference in creating a stunning final image. What makes one room look effortlessly chic and another look off? It’s all in the styling. From furniture placement to accessories, how you style a room will dictate the feeling the photo gives off. And trust me, your design will shine when the little things are thoughtfully placed.

Now, don’t get me wrong, interior styling doesn’t mean overdoing it. Sometimes, less is more. But understanding how to enhance what you already have in the space? That’s what I’m here to talk about.

Bring Bedding to Your Photoshoot: The Key to Showcasing Your Style
Beds are one of the largest pieces of furniture in a space, and when styled right, they can instantly elevate the room. Don’t skip out on bringing bedding to your photoshoot, especially if you’re not loving your client’s current setup. Fresh bedding—think luxurious duvets, throws, and a couple of plush pillows—adds texture and sophistication to any bedroom.
Not only does it bring your personal style to life, but it can completely change the vibe of the room. Don’t forget, a simple swap can make a huge impact on how the space feels in the final shot.

Fresh Florals or Branches: Adding Life to a Space
Fresh florals or branches might seem like a small detail, but they can truly breathe life into a space. Think about it: when you’re taking photos of a living room or dining room, adding in a couple of vases with fresh flowers instantly gives the space warmth. It’s amazing how something as simple as flowers can make a space look inviting and lived-in. Plus, they add some much-needed pops of color.
I also love incorporating plants, as they really enhance a space. Whether it’s a small potted plant or a large leafy green, plants bring a grounded sense of life and vibrancy to your interiors.

Garment Steamer: Wrinkles Are a No-Go
This one may seem small, but trust me, it’s a game-changer. A garment steamer is one of those essential styling tools every interior designer should have on hand. The last thing you want in your photos is wrinkled bedding, drapes, or any clothing that’s being photographed. A quick steam can smooth out wrinkles in no time and make everything look crisp and fresh for your session.
You’d be surprised at how much of a difference this little detail makes in the final photos.
Styling Open Shelving the Day Before
This is something I can’t stress enough: the more you can get done before the photoshoot, the smoother the process will go on shoot day. Interior styling tips like arranging books, vases, and other decorative items on open shelves the day before the shoot are essential. It can take a lot of time to get these pieces just right. If you wait until the morning, you’ll end up rushing, and the final shot will reflect that.
Take your time the day before to style and perfect those open shelves. When everything’s looking just right, I can capture it in a way that highlights the design without feeling cluttered.

Hiding the TV: How to Make the Space Look Less “Techy”
Now, let’s talk about one of my favorite tricks. If you’ve got a living room with a big black TV staring at you from the wall (or worse, reflecting all the light from your window), here’s a quick fix: bring a large piece of art to your photoshoot. I know, it sounds simple, but trust me—holding it up in front of the TV during the shoot and then brushing it out in Photoshop is one of the easiest ways to make your living room look less tech-heavy and more sophisticated.
It’s quick, effective, and will make the room look way more polished. Plus, it’ll keep the focus on your design, not that big black box. Win-win!
General Tips for Last-Minute Styling Fixes
Here are a few other interior styling tips to consider when prepping for a photoshoot:
Lighting Matters: It’s always essential to keep lighting in mind. Whether it’s natural light or supplemental lighting, we want to ensure it highlights the best aspects of the space.
Get Personal: Don’t be afraid to add personal touches that reflect your unique style. If you love a certain aesthetic, bring that into the photoshoot by adding key pieces that showcase your signature look.
Layering Textures: Whether it’s a throw on a chair, a rug underfoot, or some plush pillows, layering textures helps to create depth and visual interest in the photos.
Make Your Photoshoot Day Easier with Advanced Prep
Let’s face it: no one wants to rush through a photoshoot. It’s stressful, and it shows in the final images. By getting your styling and cleaning done the day before, the photoshoot itself becomes a fun, smooth process. You’ll be able to focus on what matters—capturing those beautiful details without feeling overwhelmed.

Styling = Impact
In the end, it’s simple: the way you style a room can totally transform the way it looks in photos. Whether you’re adding fresh flowers or making sure the pillows are just right, your attention to detail speaks volumes. Professional photography can only do so much, but the way a space is styled is what truly brings your design to life in the final images.
